Elsa Winckler (Author Interview)
Author Interview (The Touched Series Tour)
May 17, 2016
Please tell us a little about yourself, the romance subgenre(s) in which you write, and your newest book.
I’m a born and bred South African and I also write romances in Afrikaans. The first romance I wrote, was published in 2009 in Afrikaans and I was fortunate to win a award for that.
I write contemporary romances and I think because we live in a coastal village, the setting for most of the stories ends up being in and around the coast.
Touched to the depths, the fourth story in the Touched series about the sexy billionaire Cavallo brothers was published in December 2015.
What inspired you to write romance fiction?
I love happy endings! There is something very comforting when you pick up a book and you know that despite all the odds, the hero and heroine will find a way to be happy. The way they get there is the interesting part, the part I love to explore in my writing.
What’s your favorite part of writing?
There is a moment, usually towards the end of the story when everything falls into place – I never know when it will happen but once it does, I know the story is going to work. When I write the end, I smile 🙂
What’s the most exotic setting you’ve chosen for one of your stories and why did you choose it?
The Seychelles. The four Cavallo brothers of the Touched series own and run a string of boutique hotels in South Africa and the Seychelles. I had the privilege to visit the Seychelles about twenty years ago and I fell in love with all the different shades of blue of the ocean, the friendly people and the stunning beaches. When I had to choose an exotic place for one of their hotels, it had to be on Mahé, the biggest island of the Seychelles.
How do your family and friends feel about your romance writing?
My mom was a keen romance reader and she used to proudly read my stories. But at 91 her eyes have dimmed and her mind wanders to faraway places she can’t tell us about. She still smiles though, when I tell her about my latest story. My husband is my biggest supporter and he reads everything I write. My sister is an avid romance reader, and loves to read my stories. I value her opinion. Our kids are glad their mother has something that keeps her busy and keeps her from interfering with their lives. They also worry a little bit about the content of my stories 🙂 And although my friends tell me they read more literary books, they are all very supportive 🙂
I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my Honours studies, I was hooked for life.
I married my college boyfriend and soul mate and after 40 years, 3 interesting and wonderful children and 3 beautiful grandsons, he still makes me weak in the knees. We are fortunate to live in the picturesque little seaside village of Betty’s Bay, South Africa with the ocean a block away and a beautiful mountain right behind us.
I like the heroines in my stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong. And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity. They are of course, also gorgeous! My stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.
When it comes to men, if physiotherapist Caitlin Sutherland didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all. To help cope, Caitlin starts blogging in her spare time, about the types of men she meets and the bad dates she goes on.
While on duty during the annual Wines to Whales bicycle race, a gorgeous, sweaty cyclist walks in and sets her hormones dancing. But he is Don Cavallo; one of the four Cavallo brothers — hotel tycoons, famous as much for their business skills as for the number of beauties regularly seen on their arms.
Don Cavallo has his own issues with the other sex. He has yet to find one who is interested in him and not in his money or hotels. But when this sexy physio puts her hands on his back she not only touches his body, but also his heart.
They’ve both been burned before, but neither of them can stop themselves from playing with fire.
