Meet Lady Mary Lacey (Character Interview by Callie Hutton)
Please tell us your name and a little bit about you.
I am Lady Mary Lacey, the youngest of the Duke of Manchester’s sisters. The only unmarried one. Like the rest of my sisters, and my brother, I would prefer to marry for love. If I cannot find my true love, I will remain single. Please do not tell my mother this. Although she and my father married for love, like most good mothers of the ton, she wants to see all her children married and producing heirs.
What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fear is intimacy. I had a bad experience which left me uneasy around men who attempt to get too close. I know if I want to find my true love, I need to get over this. I will need a lot of help–and the right person.
What matters most to you?
Family means the most to me. I love my sisters and brothers and their spouses. My nieces and nephews fill a spot in my life that might very well remain unfulfilled. I am very loyal to my family, which is why I need to keep reminding myself how terribly Lord Redgrave treated my sister when he ran off with another woman. But when he turns his charm on me, all the lines grow very fuzzy.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Absolutely not! The strange tingling and other feelings I have when I am around Lord Redgrave are merely attempts to hold my anger in check. I do not care that I felt something quite different when I first encountered him, before I know who he was. He is a scoundrel. He hurt my sister. I will never feel anything more than contempt for him. No, I do not believe in love at first sight. I tell myself that all the time. Sometimes I listen.
If you could travel back in time to change one thing in your past, what would it be?
I would change my friendship with Lord Claremont. Enough said.
About The Earl’s Return (Marriage Mart Mayhem Series)
Four years ago, Darius, the Earl of Redgrave fled London two weeks before his wedding to Lady Mary’s sister and married another woman. Now a widower, he has returned to seek a new wife. One woman catches his eye . . .
At first, Lady Mary doesn’t recognize the handsome lord as the cad who ran out on her sister. After giving him the cut direct in a London ballroom, she finds herself running into him everywhere she goes, and fighting a forbidden attraction. Not only has Mary sworn off men, Redgrave is so very wrong for her. But she cannot stop thinking of his kisses. Redgrave means to stay away from Mary but it is impossible. Passion between two people who can never be together is a dangerous game.
Lady Mary reached the bottom of the steps and eyed the muddy water racing by. She glanced at him, then fisted her skirts. It was obvious the half boots she wore were going to be soaked.
Despite knowing she would object, he moved behind her, placed his arm under her legs and back, and hefted her into his arms.
“What! What are you doing? Put me down! This instant.” Lady Mary kicked her legs, but he held tighter.
“Nonsense. If you walk through that water you’ll be soaked and might catch a chill.”
“I never catch chills. Now put me down.”
“Of course.” He slid her into the carriage and climbed in after her. “There, was that so horrible?”
She straightened her hat and tugged on her already well-fitted gloves. “You had no right to manhandle me, my lord.”
“So we are back to ‘my lord’ again?” He couldn’t help but grin. Even though she was attempting to right herself, her hat was crooked, strands of her hair fell onto her shoulder, and her cheeks were flushed bright red. “I could have very easily walked across that tiny bit of water.”
