Meet Sophie Barnes (Character Interview by Claire Marti)
Please tell us your name and a little bit about you.
My name is Sophie Barnes. My friends would describe me as smart, compassionate, and loyal. Here’s what’s going on with me: When my smarmy ex-fiancé jilted me at the altar, I realized I needed to change everything in my life. At the time, I worked as a magazine editor for a women’s health magazine in San Diego, had a great group of friends, and thought I was happy. Not so much. When I re-examined my priorities, I quit my job, emptied my savings account, and moved north to Laguna Beach to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a wildly successful author.
What is your greatest fear?
It’s safe to say I’ve got abandonment issues. My dad left my mother and me when I was 5 years old. My mom is a perfectionist and I always felt like I had to achieve, to be perfect, to do something in order to be worthy of love. I’m scared to be vulnerable with Nick because I was engaged and my fiancé cheated on me—my worst fear realized. Part of why I want to write a novel is to follow my heart and do what I love, regardless of the outcome or what anybody else says.
What is your greatest strength?
I think my greatest strength is my willingness to embrace change. Once I realize something in my life isn’t working, I’ll change it. People tell me to be patient, to wait and deliberate before making snap decisions. I disagree—I will trust my gut from now on and never allow my mind to talk me out of something I feel is right. Or wrong. I figure if I make a decision that doesn’t work out well for me, I can always try something new! There’s power in movement and change.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Absolutely! Well, let me clarify—I believe in connection at first sight. When I first met Nick and our eyes met, something clicked. I’d never experienced such a deep sense of knowing, almost like we’d met before.
If you could travel back in time to change one thing in your past, what would it be?
I wouldn’t have let my mom talk me into getting a spiral perm the afternoon before the eighth grade dance: what a disaster. Ha ha, just kidding. I think I’ve destroyed all the photos from that night…
On a more serious note, I wish I’d followed my gut instincts and dug a little deeper into my ex-fiancé’s, behavior year prior to our engagement. Maybe I’d have figured out he was cheating. If I’m honest with myself, I ignored signs that my ex-fiancé was acting differently. I got so caught up in the wedding planning and the excitement that I made excuses for his behavior. Maybe I needed this lesson to remind me to stay more tuned into my inner voice. And, the drama of it all jolted me out of my comfort zone and forced me to make a change.
